CWR has received news that it has been shortlisted for a second LARAC 2024 Award for HEALTH & SAFETY INITIATIVE OF THE YEAR, following its nomination in the category ‘Best New Idea’.
Despite the long-held industry belief that drivers should support loaders in completing collections to maximise efficiency, CWR looked to challenge this widespread practice and eliminate the risks associated with leaving vehicles running and unmanned.
Having been faced with three incidents in which CWR collection vehicles rolled away whilst drivers were out of their vehicles (fortunately, no incident resulted in serious injury to the crew nor public), we implemented an industry-first pilot, mandating all drivers remain in their vehicles – regardless of whether moving or stationary.
Evidence from the pilot showed that maintaining drivers in vehicles not only significantly reduced risks associated with collection activities, but that it is possible for productivity to remain optimum. This measure is now policy at CWR and since its implementation, no further rollaway incidents or RIDDORS have occurred.
This initiative represents a significant shift within the industry, with LARAC recognising that our approach is exemplary and deserving of a recognition.
The LARAC Celebration Awards will be taking place on 10th October 2024. More information on all categories and nominees can be found here.
