CWR is proud to have launched its Care Leavers Programme, with our first two young people now in post. Working closely with Cheshire West and Chester Council's Young People’s Service and social workers, the programme champions equal opportunities for care leavers, helping them to build confidence, resilience and skills for long-term success.

By working together, we want to give care leavers the best possible chance to take their first steps into meaningful employment, with the assurance of clear guidance and ongoing support.

The programme offers a structured journey into work, beginning with an introductory placement, progressing to short-term employment and potentially leading to a permanent role. At every stage, support sits firmly at the heart of the care leaver’s journey.

Mental Health First Aiders are on hand at all 3 sites if needed and professional wellbeing support is also available through our Employee Assistance Programme.

Developed in alignment with CW&C’s Corporate Parenting Strategy, the joined-up approach to this programme ensures care leavers are not only welcomed into employment but are also set up to succeed, with professional and personal backing every step of the way.

Steve Irwin, Senior Materials & Engineering Manager who is shaping the programme, shares: “The Care Leavers Programme is about opening doors that might otherwise remain closed. By offering guidance, stability and opportunity, we can help young people build confidence and a sense of belonging as they take their first steps into work. In doing so, we not only support their personal growth but also contribute to a more inclusive and forward-looking workplace.”

Although the programme currently focuses on frontline operational roles, CWR’s ambition is broader. As it grows, we aim to open opportunities in areas such as business support, planning, materials, IT, data and communications. The programme will continue to evolve in response to the individual needs and aspirations of participants, ensuring it remains flexible and inclusive.

CWR Crews welcome Daniel to the teamConnor our first participant on the programme who joined us late summer, said: “I began working in the yard and have since moved into a Loader role, which I really love. The team is great – and I feel really supported. I really am enjoying myself.”

Daniel, who joined us this autumn as our second programme participant, added: “It’s a really positive environment and I love the work. The training has been excellent and I’ve built great relationships with the team. I know I can speak up if something’s worrying me, and I’ve felt comfortable here from day one. After just two months, I already feel settled and I can see myself staying here for years.”

In time, CWR sees the Care Leavers Programme becoming a cornerstone of its recruitment and community engagement strategy — a way to invest in young people, nurture potential and make a lasting, positive impact on individuals, the business and the wider community.
